The Institute of Economics of the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest regional scientific center specialized in a complex study of the present-day Ural. Basic scientific research lines at the Institute are

  • issues of economic security of the Russian Federation;
  • theory and application issues of the social and governmental policy at regional labour markets;
  • economy and legal control of integrated nature management;
  • issues of integration of Russia into global and regional social and economic processes;
  • development patterns of social and economic systems and institutions and modernization of them;

Economic security Center of the Institute of Economy of the Ural branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in October 1989 after a joint policy for economic security diagnostics had been developed and calculations for all the subjects of the Russian Federation had been carried out for the Government of Russia at the suggestion of a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences А.G. Granberg (chairman of the Council for productive force organization attached to the Ministry of economic development of the Russian Federation and Russian Academy of Sciences). Diagnostic pattern of condition of 12 life activity fields was obtained: investments, industry, science and technology, external economics, finances, power and demographic security, labour-market and standard of living, legal order, food and ecological security. This policy has become Russian standard (calculations based on it are carried out in a number of subjects of the Russian Federation).
